Testing

There are six CIL Tests that students must pass, in no particular order, to meet the CIL requirement at USU. These are the:
  • Computer Systems Test
  • Information Law & Ethics Test
  • Information Resources Test
  • Document Processing Test
  • Spreadsheet Test
  • Electronic Presentations Test
Computer Systems
The Computer Systems test is a multiple choice test covering operating system terminology, parts of a computer, protecting your computer against viruses and other general computer information. This test is graded automatically by the system and the student will see their score immediately. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO MULTITASK DURING THIS TEST. Please be sure that NO web pages are accessed while this test is being taken.
Information Law & Ethics
The Information Law & Ethics test is a multiple choice test covering computer copyright laws, ethical behavior, and computer users’ rights and duties. This test is graded automatically by the system and the student will see their score immediately. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO MULTITASK DURING THIS TEST. Please be sure that NO web pages are accessed while this test is being taken.
Information Resources
In the test, students will be asked several multiple choice questions about the Internet and the USU library, in addition to being required to actually look up the information using a search engine and the Library online catalog. Students will also have to email an attachment. The attachment can be sent from any email account the student wishes. This test requires a lot of multitasking. Students will have many screens open. Watch students closely to make sure that they do not go to the CIL tutorials. This test is graded partially by the computer and partially by the lab consultants.  When the student finishes the test, an email is sent to the CIL Lab, letting them know the test needs to be graded.  The student will receive an email later that day with their final score.
Document Processing
For this test students will have an initial file with information. They will need to edit and format the document as indicated by the instructions. This test can be taken using one of two programs: Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer. Only one of these programs needs to be used to complete the Document Processing test.
The Document Processing test requires students to access files on a website.  They should not access any other website except the one specified in the testing instructions. Students will NO LONGER print out their documents when finished. 

Spreadsheets
For this test students will have an initial file with information. They will need to edit and format the spreadsheet as indicated by the instructions. This test can be taken using one of two programs: Microsoft Excel or Corel OpenOffice Calc. Only one of these programs needs to be used to complete the Spreadsheets test.
Students are not allowed to use a calculator to help with this test. Students will NO LONGER print out their spreadsheet when finished.

Electronic Presentations
For this test students will have an initial file. They will need to edit and format the presentation as indicated by the instructions. This test can be taken using one of two programs: Microsoft PowerPoint or OpenOffice Impress. Only one of these programs needs to be used to complete the Electronic Presentations test.
Students will use the Internet to download some files to use in their presentation. The Internet should not be used for any other purpose. Students will NO LONGER print out their presentation when finished.
